Commentary

La collection de Dumbarton Oaks conserve un sceau de Michel magistre et économe de l’église de la Néa [1], sans iconographie, daté du XIe siècle, qui pourrait avoir appartenu au même individu à un stade ultérieur de sa carrière [2].

La Néa Ekklesia, fondation de Basile Ier, était dédiée, entre autres, à l’archange Michel, ce qui explique, en plus de l’homonymie avec le propriétaire du sceau, le choix iconographique [3]. Cette église, qui faisait partie du Grand Palais impérial mais qui possédait un statut particulier, avait un personnel nombreux et varié, dont une partie était en charge de la gestion de son important patrimoine [4] : tel est le cas de notre Michel.

L’image permet peut-être de distinguer notre Michel d’un homonyme, vestarque et grand économe du Tropaiophore, qui a choisi saint Georges : on ne peut toutefois pas exclure un changement de saint protecteur à l’occasion du transfert d’un service à un autre (voir PBW 2016, Michael 20144).
