Commentary
La datation pose a priori un problème puisque la légende semble libellée au datif, une évolution intervenant au tournant des VIIe et VIIIe siècle. Toutefois, les fouilles de Iustiniana Prima ont livré plusieurs bulles ainsi libellées conservés dans des couches du VIe siècle, ce qui amène à revoir ce critère de datation [1].
Ce personnage est également connu par d’autres sceaux issus d’un boullotèrion différent [2]. La fréquence du prénom ne permet d’ailleurs pas d’écarter l’hypothèse qu’il s’agisse de deux individus distincts. La comparaison avec les exemplaires frappés au même boullotèrion que le nôtre indique qu’une croisette, ici disparue, surmonte la légende.
L’expression latine de præfectus insularum est l’équivalent du grec ἔπαρχος τῶν νήσων, fonction qu’on a proposé d’identifier avec celle de quæstor exercitus [3].
